TREATMENT PLAN

Each patient’s treatment is based upon individual needs and medical history. Presently, the most effective approach recommended by physicians is combined decongestive therapy (CDT). CDT is a combination of skin care, manual lymphatic drainage, bandaging, remedial exercises, and compression garments. Patients attend 2-5 therapy sessions a week.

BANDAGES, GARMENTS & EXERCISES
Bandaging will follow each manual lymphatic drainage session. With continued short stretch bandages it will prevent lymph fluid from reentering the affected arm/leg.
To continue growth, exercise with bandages are recommended to be completed daily. By exercising the movement will
facilitate muscle contraction against the resistance of the bandages, creating an effective pump, thus moves stagnant lymph fluid.
Upon completion of treatment, once the affected limb is close to its normal size, the patient is fitted for compression garments, which should be worn daily.
WHAT IS LYMPHEDEMA?
Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial tissue that causes swelling. Lymphedema can develop when lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired (primary), or when lymph vessels are damaged or lymph nodes are removed (secondary). When this occurs an abnormal amount of protein-rich fluid collects in the tissues. Left untreated, this stagnant, protein rich fluid reduces oxygen availability, interferes with wound healing, and provides a culture medium for bacteria that can result in infection.
